I found the Ambient Weather WS 2000 weather station is easy to set up and provides accurate weather data for indoor and outdoor use. The weather station has a lot of pluses going for it, including a vivid LCD display.
When compared to other weather stations offered by Ambient Weather the WS-2000 stack ups favorably. While it is a great station, some downfalls should be considered before purchasing. First, let’s discuss its review.
Table of Contents
- Keep an eye on your home and backyard weather with a vibrant TFT color display
- Use the wireless all-in-one sensor array to measure wind speed/direction, temperature, humidity, rainfall, UV, and solar radiation.
- Choose between imperial and metric units, and easily calibrate for accurate readings.
- Connect to the world's largest personal weather station network with enhanced Wi-Fi capabilities
- Enjoy the convenience of a 5V DC adapter for console power (included) and add 3 AAA batteries for the sensor array (not included)
What We Like
- The connectivity features of the WS2000 are excellent. For example, you can share historical archived data through smart devices.
- All-in-one sensor suite with weather data incorporated into many innovative systems like thermostats, sprinklers, blinds, switches, etc., or indoor and outdoor readings.
- Provides accurate data on real-time weather conditions
- TFT-based tablets are expandable with remote control.
- Easy to set up for indoor and outdoor use. Our impression was that construction has been excellent—at this cost, instrument housing at other stations can seem a bit shabby at times.
- Customer reviews are pretty positive.
- Something else we’ve not mentioned in our reviews that impressed us is Ambient Weather systems’ aftersales support.
What We Don’t Like
- The display is difficult to read in direct sunlight.
- The wind speed sensor is known to be inaccurate at times
- Some components feel cheaply made
- The
rain gauge is not a separate unit, which reduces its capacity - An indoor sensor has to be separately bought to measure humidity and barometric pressure. The actual temperature data and the calculated data are projected on the indoor display. Also, there are no optional sensors.
- I think it’s a good idea to use a removable SD card. Then, easily updating the firmware is possible, as it also allows users to log the data they’d have collected by analyzing the data. Unfortunately, you need a separate card.
Ambient Weather WS-2000 Smart Weather Station with Wifi Remote Monitoring And Alerts
The Ambient Weather is a medium-price, full-function home weather station with built-in systems. The WS-2000 offers upgraded features with enhanced features that make it easier to use and more flexible.
Main features of the Ambient Weather WS 2000
As a complete weather station, it provides indoor temperature and humidity temperature and wind speed direction, and precipitation both indoors and outdoors. Additional sensors in the weather station detect UV and
Connectivity to the Internet
Internet connectivity is the shining beacon in this weather station that hardly scratches the surface when competing. Of course, there are weather bugs and weather cloud connections, but this is expected from any weather station today. These models are much more. Ambient Weather has developed a cloud-based monitoring system called the Ambient Weather Network, with present and historical data accessible via a phone app.
You can use your Alexa or Google Assistant if you want to talk to your weather station rather than look at your gorgeous TFT display.
Easy Internet connection
One helpful way to get information from weather stations is to send it to the Internet. Smart home connectivity is all but standard now, and instrumentation and sensors are significantly more accurate.
WS-2000 makes everything easy. The Weather-Underground Weather account requires you to set the settings on your WiFi router from your computer. There is no additional internet cable. Your weather data sent through Weather Underground are open to the internet and accessible to anybody. It displays no data from any remote device.
Installation
Installation was not easy because the station is a complete Sensor System mainly assembled. However, it isn’t impossible to do it correctly, even with mechanical problems. Only the
Ambient Weather sells pole extensions for many of its mounts. Suggestion: level the unit BEFORE lifting it skyward. Unless you can fly, reading the level is difficult at thirty feet in the air.
These mounts do allow inserting from the bottom. Lock the station to the mounting pole and level it. Also, note the north arrow. Align that by turning the pole, not the unit. Loosen the pole at deck level to raise the unit, insert the pole in the bottom, and push it up. Lock down the pole where it reaches the height you wish. The station should remain level if poles are correctly merged.
It is generally recommended to install the EZ-30-12 stabilizing mounting hardware kits to get the quickest and best data.
Accuracy
The model has held up well compared to Vantage Vue, and I have expected more accuracy variations, but I have no complaints. The WS-2000 sells for around the same amount as a Vantage Vue.
Temperatures and humidity were pretty accurate compared to the Vantage Vue, and the barometric pressure readings were accurate. But the response to barometry pressure was not as precise. The readings of rainfall also differed further than the Vantage Vue station’s actual conditions. These accuracy variations from more expensive stations are likely.
Osprey 7 in 1 outdoor sensor
Standard ambient weather stations equipment has two additional features usually only found on expensive systems. First, its outdoor sensors have been used to distinguish the highly popular WS-2902.
These weather station sensors have proved to be very widespread because they have a distinctive design, but they enjoy accuracy & reliability too. It uses a supercapacitor charged with
Eight wireless remote sensors (WH31B)
The WS-2000 supports up to 8 thermo-hygrometer remote sensors, soil moisture sensors, and probed thermometers. You can also add a sensor to detect lightning, four leak detectors, and indoor/outdoor PM2.5 sensors. The sensors will send data directly to the console and the Ambient Weather cloud platform, where it will be displayed.
Lightning detector
The WS-2000 comes with a built-in sensor to detect lightning to help you stay safe during storms. The detector monitors the weather conditions and sends an alarm to your phone or another device if there is a risk of a lightning storm.
Lots of information on the WS-2000 display console
In this display, there are tens of thousands of details that have various colors and can include multiple data numbers and graphs.
It contains obvious weather information from the outdoor sensors and data input from the remotely operated sensor array and calculation information such as temperature and air pressure, “feel like” temperature and dew point, and 10-minute average wind speed and direction.
Upgradability
The WS2000 will be upgraded in 2020. The new firmware added new sensor support, and now it is equipped with a new WS2902C that provides a more straightforward layout to navigate the display screen.
Furthermore, a new WH31 thermohygrometer is now available with a probe thermometer. In addition, a PM2.5 sensor could also be installed indoors.
However, reading from this sensor does not appear. Instead, the console is the central hub for supplying the sensor data to AmbientWeather.net.
Ambient Weather WS-2000 vs. the WS-2902C
Both models are built on a sensor array, but some improvements are worth the extra cost. The WS-2000 features an IPS-compatible high-definition TFT color film LCD with an even broader view angle than the WS2902C’s IPS-based display.
In addition, installation and use of the wireless router WS-2000 are easy. Typically, the settings can only be entered in the console.
Both models have the same sensor array, but some upgrades make the more expensive WS-2000 worth the extra price. Using an actual display versus the LCD panel of the WS-2902 allows it to display all kinds of information, including separate screens for recalling and charting past weather data.
The only downside about the WS-2902C would be the limited viewing angle on the display console. It can also be hard to read if direct sunlight hits the console.
Ambient Weather WS-2000 vs. the WS-5000
The Ambient Weather WS-5000 is the company’s top-of-the-line home weather station. It has all of the features that you would expect from a high-end weather station, including remote data collection, storage, and analysis. The WS-5000 also includes a comprehensive set of sensors for measuring temperature, humidity, wind speed, and direction.
The WS-2000 is the company’s mid-range weather station. It has many of the same features as the WS-5000, but it lacks some of the more advanced sensors and features. The WS-2000 is a good choice for someone who wants a high-quality weather station but doesn’t need all of the bells and whistles.
A closer review of the Weather WS-2000 Smart Weather Station
With the Ambient Weather WS-2000, other personal weather stations don’t stand a chance. You do have to create your accounts with Weather-Underground and online, but the WiFi connection settings to your router are all done from the display.
Aside from a cable to the display inside the unit, it has wireless capabilities. The sensors are primarily
FAQ
What is a TFT LCD?
It translates as thin-film transistors. The LCD display can cycle through the sensor readings. Each sensor has a maximum range of 80 feet. The TFT display screen itself measures 6.25 X 3.5 inches. Place it on your desk or mount it on the wall; just keep it within 300 feet of the outdoor sensor array.
What is AmbientWeather.net?
Ambient Weather has a wholly customized dashboard allowing for easy access across industries.
As it’s member, the weather is posted to your weather stations for free through the Ambient Weather App. It only requires an excellent wireless connection. With this, the user can easily find out the real-time conditions in the station.
You’ll also find fairly accurate readings on weather statistics such as rainy day forecast, sand, wind direction, wind chill, heat index, and UV and solar radiation. Later these devices are also possible for Google Home, IFTTT, and Alexa.
You can create customizable alerts about measured parameters and integrate your weather station with IFTTT to control external devices like sprinklers and lights.
